He did not escape from religious persecution, he adventured out because of his own greed, and he did not treat the Natives well.

He contributed to the conquest of Panama from 1514 to 1519 and Nicaragua between 1519 and 1524, and conquered Peru with Francisco Pizarro from 1532 to 1535. In 1538 de Soto set out to conquer Florida at his own expense in search of gold and jewels. On May 30, 1539, 600 Spanish and Portuguese cavalry joined his forces in Tampa Bay. For four years, they wandered to Southeast America for treasures.
