Who were these original colonists, and why did they venture to the "New World" in the first place?

The original group that settled in the New World was formed by English Puritans, who fled from England due to religious persecution.

Were these colonization enterprises successful? In other words, were their colonists prosperous, plentiful, and/or happy?  

The Northern colonies

They were self productive, formed by small farms ruled by families. Small towns with a rigid labor division, and culture of manufacture and export their production.  

The Southern colonies

Different from the Northern colonies, the Southern was formed by a biracial society and hierarchical stratified. The economy was based in rural areas and the exportation of agricultural products.

Finally, although the Northern and Southern colonies exhibit remarkably different early histories, can you pinpoint a moment or moments when their interests began converging, or when colonists across British North America began developing a common identity as "Americans?"
