Why did the federal government remove american indians from the kansas and nebraska territories? they wanted to protect the american indians from attacks by settlers. they wanted to extend the railroad and open the land to settlers. the missouri compromise declared that they had to be removed. fighting from the mexican-american war was extending into the area.
