On May 14, 1607 Jamestown was established. On this day, the Virginia Company of England made a decision that would change the history for good. They decided to "sail to a new land" which was named Virginia, in the honor of "Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen". This can be seen as the first permanent British settlement in the New World. These settlers were mostly artisans, craftsmen, soldiers, and some were labourers. But the settlement was not an easy task, as after eight months only 60 of the total 214 pioneers could survive. One such survivor was the famous explorer, Captain John Smith.
