Political achievements of the black power movement

It states on the black power movemnt's website that, During the 1960's, the Black Power Movement arguably achieved what the Civil Rights Peaceful Protests could not.

Whereas integration was at the heart of the the Civil Rights Movement and it aimed to gain this through de jure changes (Brown v. the Board of Education, Browder v. Gayle), the Black Power Movement felt that black people should take freedom, not ask for it. This vision appealed to the younger, working class black citizens rather than the middle class older people that supported peaceful protest.

Firstly, the 'Patrol the Pigs' campaign highlighted the racial abuse the black community suffered from the white law enforcement. The Black Panther Party also launched survival programs in 1968 which planned: free breakfast for school children; free health clinics and; free 'liberation schools'.

Due to a number of demonstrations in Washington D.C the black community had won the right to elect their own school boards. The SNCC's work gained $3 million worth of government funding to improve community policing.

One of the most significant successes of the movement was the liberation pf black identity. Many leaders, such as Malcolm X and and Stokely Carmichael, stressed the need for black people to be educated about their own history. Black people were encouraged to have their own identity and this included; replacing the last name with 'X' as a symbol of their original African name that had been lost, like Malcolm X, or wearing an Afro hairstyle, like Angela Davis. Black music with traditional African elements became popular and many films and Tv programs featured black people, like 'Star Trek', which featured the second inter-racial kiss in American Tv history. Bill Cosby's role in 'I Spy' was also ground-breaking for African Americans; he played a highly educated Pentagon Spy.

All in all, the Black Power Movement saw significant achievements throughout the 1960's and arguably gained what the Civil Rights movement and peaceful protests didn't for African Americans.
