The Inca were excellent metalworkers, and also practiced mining. Their enormous gold and silver reserves were obvious to the Spanish when the conquerors arrived. However, for the Inca, the metals had a religious and symbolic value. The Inca associated gold with the sun, and silver with the moon. All objects made with this metals belonged to the emperor, and could be demanded at any time. Sadly, most Inca objects made with gold and silver were melted down and transported to Spain after the conquest.
