World War 2 ended with the unconditional surrender of the Axis powers. On 8 May 1945, the Allies accepted Germany's surrender, about a week after Adolf Hitler had committed suicide. VE Day – Victory in Europe celebrates the end of the Second World War on 8 May 1945.

The Allies won: the US, UK. and the Soviet Union.

Another result of the war came about when the US dropped two atomic bombs on civilian targets in Japan. This had the dual effect of shortening the war in Asia, and of showing the nuclear capabilities of the US to the USSR. This led to the Cold War between the West and communist Russia.
