From the very beginning, even before he became President of the United States, he always believed that the Cherokees needed to be removed from Southern states and should not be allowed to exist as an independent nation. When he became President, he faced the conflict that ensued when the Cherokees demanded the recognition of several treaties signed between themselves and the U.S government and even Congress on the sovereignity and the correct management of the independent Cherokee Nation.
