What would a trend of increasing unemployment over an extended period indicate?

A contraction phase of the business cycle.

Even though the employment rate is NOT the best indicator of the nation's economy health anymore. A trend of increasing unemployment over an extend period of time indicates a contraction phase of the business cycle. The increase in unemployment, also, generates a decline in both aggregate demand and income.
