In the elections of 1884, the Independent Republicans broke away from the Conservative republicans and thereby extended their support to the Democrat candidate, Grover Cleveland, which led to his winning a decisive victory. These independent Republicans were termed as Mugwumps. The Stalwarts, on the other hand, opposed the reforms of the distribution of the civil services, supporting the patronage system, as they believed it was necessary to have the support of loyalists, who would help to consolidate the government. They clashed with the Half breeds, another faction of the Republicans, who welcomed these reforms, claiming that they were in spirit with the Reformation in American society
