The first time that I remember hearing about the conflict between the United States and the USSR was around 1946 when I was about five years old. Many USSR citizens harbored resentment towards the US and Great Britain after WWII and wanted to ensure that Germany never gained such power again. The US & Great Britain feared Soviet domination in Europe.

These fears, and other intensities including the Soviets turning down the assistance of the Marshall Plan, led to the beginning of “the Cold War”. The USSR and the US both emerged as superpowers with the intent of influencing other countries. This competition led to hostilities between the two superpowers, their leaders, and their societies.
