After the French and Indian War in 1763, the British Parliament had to raise money to pay the debts of the war. Britain’s debt doubled during the war from £75 million to £133 million because the British Government borrowed from Dutch bankers money to finance the war.

Because of that, they adopted new taxes to tax the colonies.

They taxed many goods such as sugar, paper, and tea. The Sugar Act, The Stamp Act, and the Currency Act were passed by the British Parliament to raise taxes. They also denied the colonies the right to print their own money and tightened their shipping policies.
