The Starvation Time is referred to the winter of 1609- 1610 by which most of its early settlers died of starvation or starvation-related diseases. By the time the winter arrived, there were almost 500 colonists but when the winter ended only 60 survived the harsh weather conditions. Evidence shows that residents survived by eating dogs, rats, cats and horses.
