Greece was formed into city states that were isolated from each other  

These city states often fought each other because they had differences in ideas  

The separation made different ideas possible since each city state had different rulers with different ideas  

Economic effects  

The lack of good soil for farming led to the Greeks becoming expert waterman  

The sea also made it easier and faster to trade with others around the ocean  

The mountainous terrain made it difficult and slow to trade overland

This limited trade coming from and going to the north
