Why were many medvial monasteries wealthy

Monasteries durin Medieval times were extremely wealthy. This was due to the fact that common people and peasents, convinced of the actual existence of Heaven and Hell, donated heavily to the monasteris, Some others would work at them or their land for free, as a way to obtain salvation.
