Still considering themselves English citizens seeking to protect their rights within the empire, the colonists attempted to restore relations with England one last time. The Second Continental Congress sent a letter called the Olive Branch Petition to King George III in July of 1775. The letter declared colonial loyalty to the king and asked him to end the harsh British policies so peace could return between England and the colonies.

The king, however, rejected the petition and issued a new declaration shown on this page. Declaring the colonies in rebellion, he called for stiffer measures against them.
