The Articles of Confederation was America's first constitution after becoming independent from British control. In this constitution, the delegates made a very weak federal government and gave most political power to the states. This resulted in a disorganized union of states and no way for the federal government to put down rebellions (example: Shay's Rebellion). This is why delegates meet in 1787, as they realized this constitution was not working well.

After much debate, it was decided by delegates that the US would throw away the Articles of Confederation and create a brand new constitution to live by.

Articles of Confederation was the agreement within the 13 States of USA that constituted the first constitution. Once the 13 states gave consent to Confederation, they came to force in 1781. This article clearly showed distrust in the resident in regard to strong central government. Another dispute that Articles had was a lack of judiciary. In case of issues amid states they always stood against each other, as if one verdict came in a case against the state then the other state was not accepting that verdict. These problems marked that the Articles need to be changed. Confederation lasted for 8 years and was then substituted by the current constitution of 1789.
