On this day in 1779, the louisiana governor and spanish military officer bernardo de galvez, with the aide of american troops and militia volunteers, captures the british post and garrison at baton rouge, located in what was then british-controlled west florida.

Battle of Baton Rouge between Spanish and British armies took place from September 12th and September 21st of 1779. The commander of Spanish troops was Bernardo de Gálvez, Louisiana governor and military officer and troops were around 400 regular army troops and 400 militia. The British Army, under the overall command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Dickson, was over 400 regular army troops and 150 militia. On September 21st, after three hours of battle, Dickson offered to surrender. In a brilliant move, de Gálvez included in the terms that the British surrender post and garrison at Baton Rouge but also Fort Panmure at Natchez to Spanish control.
