At the same time, the city's industry and shipbuilding industry began to flourish. Benjamin Franklin, one of the city's most famous residents, arrived in Philadelphia in 1723. Thanks to him, the city became a major cultural center. He also co-founded Pennsylvania Hospital, the first public hospital in the United States, with Thomas Bond.
