During the American Revolution, Benjamin Franklin was most instrumental in convincing France to assist the United States in the war.

He participated very intensively in the American Revolution. He influenced the drafting of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, helping Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, and went to France in search of support to continue the campaign against the British troops. There he was appointed official US representative in 1775, and in 1778 he signed a trade and cooperation treaty by which France recognized the United States as a sovereign nation, signing a military alliance against Great Britain.
