Why: she was a woman and wanted rights
Significance: was one of the most prominent reformers of the progressive era and helped to pioneer settlement house industry. Co founded hull house

*the "New Woman"

Who: Women in America
What: The term "New Woman" referred to women who began developing successful careers and positions high up in different fields of industry and other businesses. Women became more independent and were seeking positions requiring a higher level of education and many women were attending college.
When: Late 19th century and early 20th century
Where: The United States
Why: This was caused by economic and social changes throughout America. Women needed jobs and new household appliances made maintaining the home quicker and easier.
Significance: Women started to push for more rights for themselves like the right to divorce. About ten percent of women began to abstain from marriage and many found professional jobs. This also led to women's clubs and a push for women's suffrage

Who: primarily middle class women
What:social clubs for lonely women looking to socialize. Started out as a place to learn and explore literature such as poetry.
When: early 1900's
Where: more towards northern u.s.
Why:woman wanted to socialize and learn because they were not often granted those opportunities.
Significance: these clubs eventually became meeting places for discussion over social issues and politics concerning women
