- Precursor of sex hormones: progesterone, estrogen and testosterone.

- Precursor of corticosteroid hormones: cortisol and aldosterone.

- Precursor of bile salts: essential in the absorption of some lipid nutrients and * main route for excretion of body cholesterol.

- Precursor of lipid rafts.
