As human beings grow up, they get sick and then get treatment after which they develop antibodies against the illness so that the illness will not attack them again or when it does attack, won't be as serious as the first time.

Children under the age of five are usually yet to acquire those antibodies and so are at significant risk of falling ill much like other children. This is why the United Nations estimates that more than 28% of the children who die under the age of 5 are as a result of illnesses such as pneumonia and malaria.

Children under five are therefore at risk much like children above the age of five.
