The cilia and the mucus both trap foreign objects in the airways.

The respiratory system is the system in the in the body that coordinates gaseous exchange with the exterior. Certain structures such as the mucus and the cilia help to protect the respiratory system from invasion of foreign objects.

The cilia are hair like structures found in the bronchus in the lungs. The trap debris and move them out of the airways. The mucus lubricates the airways and assists the cilia in trapping foreign objects.
