Sharp pain inside the ear can be normal when the altitude changes that include changes in the air pressure.

The only time sharp ear pains get bad is when you have an ear infection which can include ringing in the ear. Sometimes an ear infection doesn't cause sharp pains in the ear it can be caused by a common cold.
