Biology students of alpha team are investigating the effect of fresh pineapple juice on cherry gelatin. The lab directions are clear: water + gelatin as a control and water + pineapple juice + gelatin as the experimental setup. However, instead of using distilled water, a team member uses liquid from a dropper bottle of hydrochloric acid. Test tubes of experimental and control tubes are refrigerated overnight. All other teams find a soupy red liquid the next day in the experimental setup and semi-solid gelatin in the control while both Alpha team gelatin setups are semi-solid. Why are their results different?
