The nurse evaluates the fetal monitor tracing of the patient, who is in active labor. Suddenly the fetal heart rate drops from its baseline of 125 beats/min down to 80 peats/min. The nurse repositions the mother, provides oxygen, increasse IV fluid, calls for help and performs a vaginal examination. The cervix has not changed from the previous exam. With the next contraction the fetal heart rate remains in the 80's. What additional nursing measure should be taken immediately?
