Explain why drug abuse is more common with teens whose family members abuse drugs.

Drug abuse often runs in families. First, there is a physical side to addiction. There are markers on genes which may make it more easy to become addicted, and these markers run in families. Secondly, there are social implications to having a family member use drugs. Teens may see their family member's addiction and think drug use is okay, or they may not get adequate attention in the home due to the drug use. Family therapy can be one way of combating drug abuse.

Family is one of the strongest influences on teens and their decision making. Parents, siblings, and other family members are guiding influences throughout a teen's life and often occupy a position of authority or power in the teen's life. As a result, teens can be strongly influenced by the poor decisions of these authority figures in their lives.
