In New York City the oceans are still cold in June even when the weather can be hot. When water absorbs sunlight, it heats more slowly than most other materials.
Conversely, our oceans are still relatively warm in December and take all the way until
early March to lose their heat. The presence of water at a location helps the location not
to get too hot in summer or too cold in winter.
Discussion and debate:
1. Predict the yearly temperature range of a location next to the ocean. You may use
the term SPECIFIC HEAT. Explain why.
2. Predict the yearly temperature range of a location away from the ocean. YOU
MAY USE THE TERM SPECIFIC HEAT. Explain why. Hint: most rocks and soil
on the land come from granite, basalt, and iron.
