The earth is not flat because the sun orbits around the earth, making half the earth light, and the other night. If the earth was flat, it would always be day.

If you think about it, imagine a sunset. It goes down, right? If it goes down, the sun goes around the earth and then, comes up from the other side of the earth, resulting in a sunrise. Then, when you look up into the sky, you can see the sun going in an arch like angle around the earth, until it is sunset again.
