How did Newton's ideas about the orbits of the planets differ from keplers ideas?

According to Kepler's first law. Kepler says that the shape of the planets' orbits is an ellipse. Kepler said that planets change speed in their orbit around the sun in order to cover equal areas in equal periods of time (2nd law). Newton said that these were due to differences in inertia and gravity.
