Border Garden Design
PURPOSE
The purpose of this activity is to design a border garden for a residential home.
OBJECTIVE
Create a border garden design.
MATERIALS
·lab sheet
paper and pencil
• reference materials
• scale
PROCEDURE
1. On a piece of paper, sketch a planting bed. The side facing the viewer should have bold angled or
incurved lines. The planting bed should measure approximately 4 to 5 feet in width by 25 to 30
feet in length.
2. Sketch "bubbles" that will represent a diversity of annual, biennial, and perennial species.
Plan on having drifts, each of the same variety of flower.
3. Choose a color scheme for the garden. Make note of the color of the variety for each
"bubble."
4. Stagger the size of the plants. Make note of the size of the variety for each "bubble." Taller
plants should be placed in the back of the garden, with shorter plants up front.
5. Select plants for the "bubbles" that are adapted to full sun exposure and moist, well- drained
loam soil.
6. Number each "bubble," and provide a corresponding plant list of the flower names.
7. Calculate the square footage each flower variety is to occupy and the number of plants
needed. Submit your calculations on a separate piece of paper.
