This activity is designed to work you through the process of selecting and organizing information in your notes and then creating an analytic paragraph that summarizes your notes. All the information required for this activity is present in your geographer's notebook. This is a writing exercise. The first two steps are notes and do not require proper grammar. The final analytic paragraph is a piece of formal writing. Spelling and grammar count on part 3 of this exercise. 1. Briefly explain why there was a split in Islam that resulted in the creation of the two different sects. (5 points)

3. Write an analytic paragraph comparing and contrasting Shia and Sunni Islam. Your paragraph should explain what the two sects have in common, where they differ, and whether the similarities or the differences are more important. You must use evidence to support every statement in your paragraph. Your paragraph must have a topic sentence, end with a concluding sentence, and use proper grammar and punctuation. Your teacher will be using the grading rubric at the bottom of this page. (10 points)
