The European Union (EU) serves as a central hub of political and economic collaboration for many European nations. Member states are able to work together to ensure the free movement of people, goods, and capital while maintaining common policies that mutually benefit all included countries. Not all European nations, however, are members of the EU. Using your knowledge of the EU, its member countries, and other European nations, identify current non-member nations that might wish to become members. Choose one of those non-member nations, and act as its representative by formulating a one-page letter applying for membership to the EU. Here are some ideas to keep in mind while writing your application: There are political and economic criteria a country must abide by in order to become an EU member. Based on your knowledge of your chosen nation, as well as any additional online research, explain in your letter how your country meets or plans to meet the criteria. Many organizations are consulted before making the unanimous decision to admit or deny a country acceptance to the EU. These consulting organizations include the Council of Europe, the European Commission, and the European Parliament. Make sure to address the known concerns of these organizations.
