According to this theory, the earth is broken into series of slabs called lithosphere which moves over the weak and semi solid asthenosphere below.

During plate convergence, they grind against one another and builds up mountains. At a divergent margin, magma wells up and it is cools and solidifies covering an extensive expanse of area.
