In what ways has life improved since the fall of Communism for devout Muslims in central Asian republics like Kazakhstan?

The Soviet union, especially before Gorbachev,  would denounce, torture, threaten, and kill muslims. all of central asia was controlled by it, and the only escape was to neighboring countries, like iran, pakistan, afghanistan etc. since the fall of communism, they have had more money, more rights, and all in all a better life.
