Colombia is a country that has a big diversity in its population. The country is a former Spanish colony, so apart from the native populations, Europeans and Africans also got involved in the creation of the modern-day ethnic composition of the country. The majority of the population is classified as mestizo, followed by White Colombians and Afro Colombians. A much smaller percentage of the population consists of descendents of the indigenous people, around 4.4% by some estimates.

Even though it is only 4.4% of the population descended from the indigenous people, there are 86 recognized ethnic groups. Several of these ethnic groups make up the majority of the population of indigenous people, such as the Muisca, Arhuaco, Kogi, Embera, Wayuu, and Paez. The rest of the indigenous ethnic groups have very small populations, and this is largely due to the fact that 70 of these ethnic groups around found in the Amazon, where the ethnic groups usually are comprised of the inhabitants of a single village.
