Another reason is that the population is engaged in agriculture, thus more children mean more labor force in the family. The death rates too are very high though, with a very large percentage of children aged 1 or less are dying, and the average life span is very low (in the 40's), with the reasons being the terrible living conditions and lack of healthcare. Because of these two traits, the population growth is very slow, or the population stagnates.
