The earthquakes occur when a fault slips if we talk about earthquakes that occur at transform boundaries. Basically, the fault slips deeper because of the big pressure it causes on the crust below, and as it does and hits slightly lower it releases huge energy.

The faults form when the crust breaks, and this happens at transform boundaries. Depending on the pressure that will cause the crust to break, they can be caused by vertical or horizontal pressure.
