Analyze & Conclude: Flooding Flooding is any high water that overflows the natural banks of a river channel. Humans have positively interacted with river flooding processes for millenniums. For one, floodplain alluvial deposits are rich in nutrients, conveniently flat for farming, and episodically receive water from channel overflow. The Nile River (Egypt), the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers (Iraq), and the Mississippi River (US) are common examples of rivers and floodplains that humans have lived off of from antiquity to today. A specific example from today is floodplain farming, where rice farmers trap the overflow in man-made terrace sections across the floodplain (Figure. E1). In fact, water and farming are so important to civilization, that many of the earliest settlements that grew into cities are located adjacent to rivers. Figure E1: Rice farming terraces on a floodplain in Vietnam. Unfortunately, flooding can also be a hazard. Hundreds of millions of people live near or in areas that experience flooding like floodplains and deltas. For example, Bangladesh is one of the most populated places on Earth and three-quarters of its land surface is a floodplain. Large storms bring excess water volumes to the land surface that far surpass the capacity of the terrestrial channel network to accommodate, which leads to flooding of the surrounding and downstream landscapes on seasonal, if not more frequent, timescales. In summary, the relationship between river water flow and river flooding processes and human activities can be both beneficial and destructive. In this exercise, analyze the relationship between river flooding processes and human behaviors to conclude on what kind of relationship it is. Drag the appropriate items into their respective bins.
