Difference in mass balance between accumulation and ablation zones create a slope on the glacier surface. In the figure here, note that the bottom glacier sketch has a steeper slope than the top glacier sketch due to differences between mass added and lost. The surface slope allows ice to flow from the accumulation zone to the ablation zone; the steeper the slope, the faster the flow. The mass balance gradient (MBG) determines the surface slope and can be calculated by the change in mass balance across the equilibrium lineMass balance gradient (MBG) = Change in Mass balance / Change in elevationFor the following glaciers calculate the mass balance gradient based on the information provided.(a) Down below is a table for 5 glaciers that have Annual mass balance measurements in mm of water equivalent (w. e) per year at three locations. Use this location to determine the mass balance gradient for each glacier. The first one is done for you as an example. Values of mm of water equivalent at each elevation 2000 (m) 1900 (m) 1800 (m) Mass balance gradient across the equilibrium line (mm w. e/m)Example +500 0 -200 (500-(-200))mm/(2000-1800) m = +3.5 mm/m1 +200 0 -502 +100 0 -1003 +200 0 -2004 +500 0 -3005 +50 0 -50(b) Use excel to make a line graph plot of each of these glacier measurements to show their mass balance gradient using the information given. Be sure to have each of the glaciers a different color to make things easier to see and have a title and axes labelled You can submit the excel sheet separately or copy and paste the graph into the word/google document.(c) Which mass balance gradient (steep or flat) have the larger gains (inputs)?(d) Which glacier should have the fastest flowing ice and why?
