Fossils are evidence of life on Earth from long, long ago. Fossils can be bones or teeth or whole insects encased in amber. Fossils can be footprints or impressions of plant of animals parts. Fossils are often found buried in layers of soil and rock. When scientists find layers of rock containing fossils, they know that the oldest fossils are found in the bottom layer and as they work up toward the ground, the layers get younger.
