The differences between Richter scale and the modified scale are as follows:
RICHTER SCALE:
The Richter scale is used to determine or measure the magnitude of the earth quake by measuring the seismic waves.
The scale has a logarithmic measurement
.The calculation is done in logarithm form from base-10 which is based on the amplitudes of the waves.
MODIFIED/MERCALLI SCALE:
The modified or Mercalli scale is used to determine or measure the intensity of the earthquake by the observed effects
.The scale has a linear measurement.
The calculation is quantified which is based on the observation of the earthquake's effects on the earth.
The bellow are the similarities between Richter scale and the modified scale:
Both Richter and Modified scale is a tool used for measuring some factors in an earthquake.
Both are measured but it has a specified range.
