While a passive sensor mounted n a satellite does not have its own original source of light it relies on the light obtained from the natural solar system. The natural light illuminated the object on which it focuses on and captures data and thus saves energy. The use of flash or an infrared beam of the laser is used to highlight the object. As all of these are based on the reflectance property of light that reaches the camera.
