If you are ever at the ocean and the water recedes abruptly, beware that it may be due to an approaching tsunami. tsunamis are waves with extremely long wave lengths (low frequencies) and are caused by large-scale displacements of water (e. g., by tectonic shifts and landslides). while these waves are relatively harmless in the deep sea, the wave amplitude increases as the tsunami approaches the shore and slows down. the long wave lengths associated with tsunamis allow them to travel further inland than typical (wind-driven) waves because low-frequency waves lose energy more gradually. (this is similar in trend but different in physical mechanism to low-frequency bass waves travelling through walls more readily than shorter treble tones or low-frequency, red & yellow light waves penetrating the (effectively thicker) sunset atmosphere more readily than high-frequency light.) a better understanding of tsunamis may alleviate the damage tsunamis cause. assume the energy of a tsunami is a function of the fluid density p, tsunami wavelength a, wave speed c, amplitude a, frequency f, gravity g, and fault length l. is frequency independent of wave speed and wavelength? knowing that tsunamis can reach wave lengths of hundreds of kilometers (and amplitudes of 30 meters), choose a reasonable scaling to perform tsunami testing (using seawater in your model) determine the relationship between the energy of your model tsunami waves and the energy of an actual tsunami. (shouldn't it be enormous? )
