The fault block mountains are mountains that form because of tension in the Earth;s crust. At places where the crust is pulled apart because of intense tension, the crust cracks, thus forming faults. The tensions manage to push parts of the crust upward, while keeping other parts low, or even lowering them down. This creates mountains that are very steep and very well defined, with valleys in between them. The mountains have sharp uplift, and the valleys are covered with sediment from their erosion, making them flatter. This type of creation of mountains often gives a relief often referred to as chess-type relief, as there are mountains and valleys one after another in all directions, giving the appearance of chess table when seen from space. A nice example of this is the relief in the Republic of Macedonia.

Fault block mountains, are formed by the movement of large crustal blocks along faults formed when tensional forces pull apart the crust. Tension is often the result of uplifting part of the crust.
