Before he assumed the post of the president, he had served as the vice president for 2 years. During the seven years of his presidentship, he implemented several measures in order to eradicate poverty, foster health care facilities, and abolish racial discrimination to bring equality. He intended to bring these reforms through a program called 'The Great Society' which was a brainchild of his own.
