What happened before French tried to build a Central America Canal?

Yellow Fever was a huge problem. There was incomplete studies as to its cause. The human toll was high. Also the financial cost was astronomical. There were a lot of other needs in France and a canal far away at such cost could not be justified. When the United States agreed to take it over, it served both counties' needs.
