Romantic poetry, in contrast with neoclassical poetry, is based upon and driven by emotions over reason or logic. romantic poetry was often anti-establishment, focusing on the good of individual people. poets such as blake, wordsworth and shelley were inspired by a strong desire for liberty and heavily criticized the maltreatment of the poor. strong emphasis was put on the idea that one should focus on one's own goals and ideals rather than imposed rules or conventions. equally, in contrast to the classics, romanticism promoted the idea that one could be a hero in their own right, rather than needing from outside sources or holy beings. this reflected the popularity of individualist ideas during the early 19th century. this focus on the importance and significance of an individual has been explored in many romantic poems, such as coleridge's frost at midnight.
