In three to four sentences, describe how poe uses imagery and sound devices to create mood in "the raven.”

Poe uses alliteration (the repetition of similar sounds at the beginning of a group of words), onomatopoeia,  as well as rhythm to help create the dark ominous mood in "The Raven". The following line contains all of these sound devices "While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,/As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door –". The sudden repetitive noise starts to create the mood as one of mystery. Something is amiss. This dark and ominous mood becomes more suspenseful as the rhythm picks up speed and intensity. For example the lines "On this home by Horror haunted – tell me truly, I implore – /Is there – is there balm in Gilead? – tell me – tell me, I implore!'" have faster more insistent rhythm as the speaker becomes more agitated and the mood gains intensity.

Poe uses images that appeal to the senses of sound, sight, and touch. At first, these images create a gloomy, mysterious, and tense mood. Then, the mood becomes haunting. Sound devices, such as the repetition of the name “Lenore” and its constant rhyming with “nevermore,” create a slow, haunting sound that further contributes to the spooky mood.
